(As at June 2021) The next District Court hearing of the WorkSafe prosecution related to the Whakaari-White Island disaster will be held at the Whakatāne District Court, 7 Pyne Street, on Thursday 3 June and Friday 4 June, 2021.
This is an administrative hearing where several matters could be discussed, including on the venue for future hearings and any trial or trials.
The hearing begins in Courtroom 1 at 10am. A mihi whakatau will take place at 8.15 am.
The hearing is open to the public. Those wanting to attend in person are advised to arrive early. Seating in the courtroom is limited because of the high number of participants. Members of the public may be directed to another venue* nearby where they can watch proceedings on a live video link. This venue is on the ground floor of Acacia House, 19 Louvain Street.
The Whakatāne District Court will otherwise be operating as normal. The public counter will remain open, filing and JP services will continue as usual, and other hearings will go ahead.
*The public are expected to observe normal court protocol at the Acacia House venue i.e. cameras and recording devices should not be used, phones should be turned off and all directions of the Judge and court staff should be followed.
